Lawmakers in Arkansas have called for a tax on charity bingo games to be repealed to prevent cutting into money that would benefit the needy.
Bingo and raffles for charitable purposes were legalised in the state in 2006 and lawmakers approved a one cent tax on each bingo card last year to help pay for enforcement of the regulations.
Representatives of the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion posts in Arkansas have urged legislators to drop the tax and allow local officials to enforce bingo rules.
Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe said he is opposed to repealing the tax but is open to reviewing it.
