Online bingo could be set to boom in California after Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation authorising high-stakes bingo for charities and non-profit organisations.
Under the bill, Indian gaming tribes, the Catholic Church and other charities could offer remote bingo to thousands of players with high jackpots.
This could pave the way for a shift in California law, which has previously stated that electronic bingo is illegal. Online bingo sites could be the beneficiaries of such changes.
However, while the bill represents a victory for tribes and the church, it also outlaws non-Indian bingo machines, which had previously been a crucial source of income for other charities.
Doug Bergman, president of the United Cerebral Palsy of Sacramento, told the San Diego Union Tribune: "There are some people talking about what the next steps are. I'm hoping there's going to be further litigation."
