Weekly bingo games have raised enough funds to pay off the mortgage of St Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Danbury, Connecticut.

After 15 years of playing host to two bingo sessions each week, the church finally has enough money to pay off its $860,000 mortgage.

Rev. Michael G. Popson, the church pastor, told the Connecticut Post: "We're going to burn the mortgage in the spring. A lot of work and sacrifice by the parish went into this."

The pastor was presented with a check for $6,410 on Sunday morning by bingo co-ordinators Stephen Sedlak and Stephany Fanning.

Sedlak commented: "That's over 1,300 bingo sessions in 15 years. It's my hobby. I don't mind it."
