Mintel Reports Thriving Bingo Market
Leading Market Research company, Mintel have recently completed a major report on the bingo market and their findings make interesting reading. The effect of the smoking ban is examined along with a detailed analysis on how the current recession is affecting the market. The report also highlights the impact of online bingo on live bingo halls.
Bingo is enjoyed on a regular basis by an estimated 3.5 million players. The game is acquiring a new young fan base with a fifth of regular players coming from the 18 to 24 age bracket. The 18 to 45 age bracket accounts for 62% of all bingo players. Many of these are well healed professional workers, and it is the online version of this traditional game that has attracted them.
Live bingo halls are losing customers who are now satisfying their enjoyment of bingo by playing online. In fact live bingo has seen a fall in revenues of 26% and the number of regular players has fallen by a fifth. There is no reason to suppose that this will be reversed over the next twelve months. Overall bingo was not recession-proof, but it is the live game that has suffered most.
More targeted marketing is possibly called for in order to regenerate interest in the live game. One approach a number of organisations are using is the introduction of new style of bingo halls which provide additional attractions. By integrating a variety of entertainments with wine bars and restaurants, the proprietors are providing the bingo player with a new experience and social event.
The prospects for online bingo are excellent. Already bingo games are proving to be a recession beater and we can expect some serious advertising campaigns in the near future. There will no doubt be changes within the industry as the old is replaced by the new, but it is the new that will generate new business. Bingo may be changing, but it is here to stay.
