William Hill is the UK's biggest bookmaker and online gaming provider and is one for the first to try and get a foothold in the US market as the legislation is under review.
A significant step forward has been made recently by the company being granted a license by the Nevada Gaming Commission.
In 2006 online gambling was banned in the USA, but recent moves means it looks like this ban will be relaxed in the future. In anticipation of this, in 2011 William Hill bought three US betting firms, Brandywine Bookmaking, American Wagering Inc and Club Cal Neva Satellite Race and Sportsbook - an outlay of $53.25m.
These acquisitions were dependent on the subsequent license applications being granted and now these deals look set to be complete by the end of June thanks to the Nevada license success.
Sports betting is now legal under federal law in four states - Nevada, Oregon, Montana and Delaware - with others expected to follow in time.
William Hill is the first of the British bookmakers to see success in this area and the firm is now looking to play a leading role in the field in the US.
Ralph Topping, William Hill Chief Executive, explained, "A Nevada gaming license is recognized around the world as a significant regulatory seal of approval and we are proud to have earned it."
He continued, "We are now able to bring together these three businesses to create a leading position in the US sports betting market, combining our brand and product range with AWI, Brandywine and Cal Neva's extensive footprint, strong local relationships and trusted service. We look forward to working with our new colleagues to grow a leadership position in the US gaming industry."
All areas of online gambling, including online bingo operators, are keeping a close eye on developments in the US market and operators and players alike are hopeful of the area opening up again in the not too distant future.
