WhichBingo readers may have seen the blog recently on The Underground Rebel Bingo Club and how the creators stumbled upon the idea by accident, but have hit on a winning formula and are re-introducing the youth of today to bingo being fun.
The idea is gaining in popularity. It is clear that the twenty and thirty somethings that still feel they are too cool for school and wouldn't be seen dead inside a traditional bingo hall are looking for something extra on a night out that alcohol alone cannot provide. Enterprising club owners are taking their lead from the Rebels and are either offering something equally risque, such as Drag Queen Bingo or maybe a little more sedate like Rock and Roll Bingo.
In the drag queen version the action takes place in appropriately themed cabaret clubs and the rudeness of the calls and jokes give the Rebels a run for their money.
The owner of one Florida based drag club said, "We used to think they came to see us and then bingo was added extra, now I think they come for bingo."
Clubbers and pubbers of a certain age can definitely see that the excitement of bingo is a perfect accompaniment to their normal drink fuelled nights out and they like the idea that you can go out and have a shot at going home with more than you came with.
Rock and Roll bingo has been around for a while, but is also gaining momentum, especially in pubs that have been hard hit by the recession and the smoking ban and are looking for ways to get people through the doors, especially younger people.
Instead of listening to a caller shouting out bingo nicknames such as "legs eleven" and "two little ducks", players get to listen to clips of classic tunes and mark off song titles and artists on their cards, instead of numbers. Just like traditional bingo, winners are those with the first complete line and the first full house.
Online bingo may have taken customers away from the traditional bingo halls initially, but it has also introuduced the concept of bingo to a much younger audience who ultimately may be the saviours of the game at all levels and in all its forms.
